World Bank visits Alegria National High School

October 09, 2014 -- The World Bank went to Alegria NHS, Surigao del Norte to investigate on various concerns in education and K-12 implementation specifically on Learning, Equity, and Accountability Program Support Project (LEAPS) which is a US$300 million worth of loan granted by The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors to the Department of Education.

“Through LEAPS and with the help of World Bank, DepEd [Department of Education] will be able to advance the basic education agenda of the government. To deliver quality education, we need to empower not only our learners, but also our teachers,” said EducationSecretary Bro. Armin Luistro. “LEAPS will strengthen accountability and incentives for teachers; improve teaching and learning in early grades, especially in reading and math; and address the needs of our disadvantaged learners,” The World Bank published.

The Supreme Student Government Officers as the representatives of the main stakeholders of Alegria NHS did not hesitate to inform The World Bank investigation team of the many problems encountered especially in learning materials, instructional materials and other things which are vital in teaching-learning process.

Real situation had been shared by the student representatives to the investigating team headed by Lynnette Perez.

Though problems were delineated, the SSG Officers did not forget to mention their best practices which cope with the experienced difficulties, one of is the peer tutoring and intensifying of seminars which address the problems on bullying, hazing, sexual abuse, exploitation, child abuse, racial discrimination and even VAWC.

The investigating team as per Mr. Tabamo, the SSG President, were amazed of what they have learned from them. "We did not intend to amaze them, we just spoke of what is apparent and what we contributed for the betterment of our beloved Alegria NHS."

The faculty as well shared their best practice of spending personal money, aside from adopting student or even students, just to beautify their respective classrooms and attain the best homeroom as learning environment where students will enjoy learning.
